Therapy

My approach emphasizes attention to unconscious processes, relational patterns, and the meanings underlying symptoms. This includes careful listening to both what is said and what may be more difficult to articulate. Treatment is grounded in psychoanalytic principles, with attention to the therapeutic relationship as it unfolds in the room, as this is where familiar patterns often emerge and can be understood in real time. Sessions are typically held once to multiple times per week, depending on clinical necessity and patient interest in deeper work.

In one sentence: a space to think, feel, and understand oneself more deeply.

The initial assessment is a 1-4 session process whereby we will work together to make sense of the difficulties you are experiencing that have led to you seek my help. Having access to a referral as well as the online intake form which you will complete at least 3 business days in advance of our initial appointment will help us to make the most of our time together.

The first appointment is 75 minutes in length, and takes place on Fridays. After this, any subsequent followup appointments during the initial assessment or as part of the treatment phase will take place on a consistent day of the week and time of day between Monday to Thursday (in the evening) and will be 45 minutes in length unless discussed otherwise.

The initial assessment provides an opportunity to begin understanding your concerns and to consider whether the type and format of psychotherapy I provide may be helpful to you. We will discuss your current difficulties, relevant history, and what you are hoping for in treatment. Attention is also given to how we experience working together, as this can offer important information about fit and potential direction.

At the conclusion of the initial assessment we will take time to review how the process has been for you, answer any questions about working together that you may have, and we will discuss a preliminary impression of your presenting concerns as well as discuss a treatment plan.

If there is a shared understanding and mutual agreement on the presenting concerns, goals, and tasks of the therapy then the initial assessment will shift into the treatment phase. If shared understanding and mutual agreement are not in place, or if you may benefit more from a different type of therapy/working with a different therapist or require a higher level of care, then no further meetings will be arranged and our consultation will come to an end from anywhere between 1-4 sessions as part of the initial assessment phase.
